Jinping II HPP Put into Commercial Operation

Subject to 72-hour testrun, the first 600MW generating unit of Jinping II HPP with the largest hydraulic tunnel caverns in the world was put into commercial operation on Dec. 30, 2012. The clean hydropower of the first batch of Jinping II Project was transmitted to the East China Region via 800kV DC transmission line. This marks the project which bears the dream of generations of hydropower workers and shoulders the important task of “West-East Power Transmission” started to create benefits.

Since October 2012, the designers have actively participated in all tests and preparations prior to power generation of the project, offered advices to the project owner and all the construction parties concerned and shared responsibility, and constantly optimized and perfected the test process. Reports of good news came in quick succession: on Oct. 18, the water filling of No. 1 water conveyance system succeeded at one go; on Dec. 21, inverse power transmission of the project succeeded and the load test was started for No.1 Unit; at 13:39 p.m. of Dec. 24, all required tests were successfully completed for the debugging of No. 1 Unit, and the 72-hour grid-connection testrun was commenced; at 13:39 p.m. of Dec. 27, 72-hour testrun of the unit was smoothly completed and the unit was successfully put into commercial operation and all the technical parameters remained stable.

Jinping II HPP is equipped with eight generating units with unit capacity of 600MW, which is currently the turbine-generator unit with largest unit capacity for the head range of 300m in the world. With mean annual energy output of 24.23 billion kW.h, Jinping II HPP is the hydropower station with the highest head and largest installed capacity on the Yalong River.
