EPC Contract Signed for Karuma HPP in Uganda

On Aug. 16, 2013, the EPC contract signing ceremony was held for Karuma Hydropower Project in the 1st floor Boardroom of Ministry of Energy & Mineral Developmentin Kampala, Uganda. Among the participants were officials from Ministry of Energy & Mineral Development of Uganda, the power transmission and transformation company, the power company and the Ministry of Justice, and the representatives from Energy Infratech Private Limited., an Indian consulting firm, the International Company of Power Construction Corporation of China, SINOHYDRO Bureau 8 Co., Ltd., and Hydrochina Huadong.

Karuma HPP will house six 100MW turbine-generator units with a total installed capacity of 600MW. The diversion-type developed project is composed of concrete gravity dam, water conveyance system and underground powerhouse. Since September 2011, the bidding activity for Karuma HPP lasted for about two years. As the design party of the EPC bidding team, all the departments concerned of Hydrochina Huadong including Management Department of Overseas Business, Management Department of Hydropower Business and all professional divisions made concerted efforts, especially the staff of the Karuma HPP Design Department held together and cooperated sincerely for the implementation of the project.

The smooth signing of the EPC contract represents an extremely important milestone of Karuma HPP. Moreover, the successful award of the EPC bid of the project marks Hydrochina Huadong’s new achievement in participating in construction of international hydropower projects on EPC basis with the designer taking the leading role and the participation in the international EPC-based design activities of the large hydropower project will comprehensively upgrade Hydrochina Huadong’s hydropower design capability in accordance with international standards.
