Third International FLAC/DEM Symposium Held in Hangzhou

To enhance the technical exchanges among the users of FLAC/DEM geotechnical engineering numerical software, to find the way of its future development, and to upgrade the geotechnical engineering numerical calculation, the 3rd International FLAC/DEM Conference (jointly with Annual Conference for Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering Numerical and Physical Modeling Branch) was held on Oct. 22-24, 2013 in HNA Resort Huagang, Hangzhou.

Over 100 domestic and foreign scholars attended the symposium. During the three days, academic exchanges were carried out in the frontier scientific issues covering coupling and timing effect of rock mechanics, equivalent rock model, rock dynamics, hydraulic crack, constitutive model development, and other rock mechanics numerical modeling. Profound topic reports were presented at the conference by Dr. Charles Fairhurst, member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineers and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, Dr. Peter Cundall, fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and member of the U.S. Academy of Engineering, Dr. Loren Lorig, internationally renowned expert in rock mechanics and President of Itasca International Inc., and Dr. Yang Qiang, director of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics Numerical and Physical Modeling Professional Committee, etc..

Hydrochina Huadong presented at the conference, i.e., “Time Dependent Failure of Headrace Tunnel Marble in Jinping Hydropower Station” and “Numerical Simulation for Danba Two-mica Schist Deformation and Strength Anisotropic Characteristics”, which presented the research achievements by Hydrochina Huadong and Itasca International Inc..

This Conference was jointly sponsored by Itasca International Inc. and Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics Numerical and Physical Modeling Professional Committee, organized by ItascaRock Engineering R&D Co., Ltd. Zhejiang Branch and Itasca (Wuhan) Consulting Co. Ltd, and co-hosted by Hydrochina Huadong.
