The First Composite Cylinder WTG Foundation and WTG Installed

On June 14, 2017, the one-step installation of the world’s first composite cylinder wind turbine generator(WTG) foundation and 3MW WTG structure was completed for Jiangsu Xiangshui Offshore Wind Farm Project. The engineering survey and design of the project were undertaken by Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited. The successful transport and installation of the composite cylinder foundation in assembly filled the gap in the integrated installation for offshore wind power projects in the world, and created a new way of efficiently and rapidly building an offshore wind power project at low cost.

The installation lasted about 21 hours for exhaust, pumping and levelling, and about 10 hours for continuous pumping and negative pressure reinforcement. The levelness was kept around 0.35 ‰, which is far below 2‰ required by the construction technical specification.

The composite cylinder foundation is another kind of new type of offshore WTG foundation designed and successfully applied by Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited following the monopile foundation without transition section, pile jacket foundation, high-rise pile cap foundation, and rock-socketed monopile. It further enhanced the core competitiveness of the corporation in offshore wind power. Based on the principle of negative pressure sinking, the foundation is sunken to the design depth below the mud surface under the action of the dead weight and negative pressure of the foundation and superstructure, which facilitates the maritime transportation and installation, and greatly reduces the construction cost of the foundation for offshore wind power projects. It is applicable to some regions in China with the appropriate water depth and geological conditions, and brings a bright prospect of engineering applications.
