On August 3, 2017, a mobilization meeting was successfully held at the site for construction of Baihetan Hydropower Station on the Jinsha River. After more than 20 years of planning, studies and early-stage preparation, the world’s largest hydropower station under construction for which Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited undertakes the whole process investigation and design was approved by the State Council and the historical moment of construction commencement of the project finally came.

Baihetan Hydropower Project, with an installed capacity of 16000MW, is presently the world’s largest hydropower station under construction, and it will become the world’s second largest hydropower station only next to the Three Gorges Power Station after its completion. The unit capacity, the scale of the underground caverns, the comprehensive technical difficulty of the extremely-high dam of the project rank first in the world, and several technical indexes rank the forefront of the world, which represents China’s, even the world’s leading level in hydropower project design and construction as well as electromechanical equipment design and manufacture.

The closure of the main river channel was fulfilled in November 2015 and concrete placement of the first concreting block was conducted in April 2017. It is planned to start concrete placement in underground powerhouse in first half year of 2018, fulfill reservoir impoundment in May 2021, and put the first generating unit into operation in June 2021.
