Breakthrough in Offshore Wind Power

HYDROCHINA HUADONG has undertaken investigation and design for a number of offshore wind farms. By the end of 2011, the installed capacity of the completed offshore wind farms has amounted to 150MW and that of the offshore wind farms in early stage and under construction has exceeded 6000MW, accounting for 70% of the market share of offshore wind farms.

Among them, the two 50MW components of the 150MW Jiangsu Rudong Intertidal Zone Wind Farm Demonstration Project, for which HYDROCHINA HUADONG undertook investigation and design, have been completed and 38 WTGs have been connected to the grid for commercial operation. It is the first intertidal zone wind farm, and its completion marks the material progress made in construction of “Offshore Three Gorges” Wind Power Base. At the same time, the WTGs of the first batch of Jiangsu Xiangshui Offshore Wind Farm, for which HYDROCHINA HUADONG provided investigation and design services, were put into operation in May 2010. It is the first offshore WTG installed and completed in Jiangsu Province. For installation and transportation of the equipment, the semi-submersible barge was employed for the first time to float the large crawler crane and sail into the working face by virtue of the tide, and great success was made in the divided hoisting program after the barge was put in place. Therefore, extensive theoretical and practical engineering experience has been gathered in the marine engineering field and a good foundation has been laid for scale-up development of offshore wind power.

Since 2004, HYDROCHINA HUADONG has devoted itself to research on key technologies of offshore wind power development. The company undertook such research project assigned by Ministry of Science and Technology, participated in preparations of technical codes and specifications regarding national planning and feasibility study for offshore wind power, wind measurement technology, wind resources evaluation, marine hydrology, etc. In addition, Provincial Hi-Tech Enterprise R&D Center for Offshore Wind Power in East China and the Post-doctoral Workstation for Offshore Wind Power have been established in HYDROCHINA HUADONG. Over recent years, HYDROCHINA HUADONG has undertaken technical services with respect to tendering of the first batch national offshore wind power concession projects and technical services concerning investigation and design for all the projects after the concessions were granted. So far, HYDROCHINA HUADONG has become the largest design and consulting firm for offshore wind farms and its engineering performance and technologies in investigation and design of offshore wind farms take the lead in China.
