April 18 to 25, 2012, Hangzhou, HYDROCHINA HUADONG invited two renowned academicians to make reports in its headquarters. Mr. Chen Houqun, a highly acknowledged domestic academician who is specialized in seismic problems of hydraulic structures, made the report titled “Evaluation on Seismic Damage and Failures of High Concrete Dams”. Mr. Zhang Chuhan, the famous academician from Department of Hydraulic Engineering of Tsinghua University gave two reports respectively titled “Some Key Issues Regarding Seismic Design of High Dams in China after Wenchuan Earthquake” and “On the Damages of the Earthquake and Tsunami which Struck northeast Japan on March 11 2011”. Over 200 technical staff from HYDROCHINA HUADONG attended the report meeting.
In his report on April 18, 2012, Mr. Chen Houqun gave the audience a systematic introduction to the up-to-date exploration and research in earthquake resistant engineering solutions for high dams and outlined some key technical issues in the field such as the research on seismic design in construction of high dams, the determination of maximum credible earthquake (MCE) and relevant ground motion parameters, as well as the quantitative rule for ultimate state of “dam break”. The report covers not only the state-of-art technology in the field but also pragmatic research findings which refreshed the audience’s knowledge for seismic design and safety of dams.
Mr. Zhang Chunhan made the following two reports on April 25, 2012, namely, “Some Key Issues Regarding Seismic Design of High Dams in China after Wenchuan Earthquake” and “On the Damages of the Earthquake and Tsunami which Struck northeast Japan on March 11 2011”. Mr. Zhang briefed the researches in China after the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake with regard to damages of the earthquake to dams and the inversion study. He also gave an account of the current problems and challenges high dams face and made a conclusion of the up-to-date successful domestic experience as well as existing problems in dealing with earthquake resistance issues. Based on the modern solutions, Mr. Zhang proposed a preliminary control standard for seismic behavior of high dams and brought forth the latest achievements in the research of earthquake resistant performance of materials for high dams. Although the findings are quite profound and scientific, Mr. Zhang made the reports in an easy way, therefore, the audience benefited a great deal from his reports.
As the company undertakes more and more large engineering projects, it has become a common understanding to strengthen theoretical study so as to seek the solutions to key technical problems. The reports made by the experienced and renowned academicians help a lot the technical staff in the company. Over the past years, HYDROCHINA HUADONG has received many concerns from academicians and experts such as Mr. Chen and Mr. Zhang. The two academicians have provided helpful solutions, technical support and guidelines for the company in dealing with some problems in engineering design. In particular, Mr. Chen has become a member of the Academician Expert Workstation in Hydrochina Huadong Engineering Corporation since 2011.
