ASCE Expert Group Investigating the Municipal Road Infrastructure and Soft Foundation Treatment EPC Project Group Undertaken by ECIDI

A few days ago, an expert group of ASCE visited and investigated the Lot I of FY2018 Municipal Road Infrastructure Project of Eastern New District of Taizhou City and the Soft Foundation Treatment Project (Lot II) of the block to the south of Changpu River in the east of Juyang Avenue, Eastern New District of Taizhou City, both of which are under the EPC of ECIDI. The investigation group, led by James Collin, the chairman of Geo-Institute of ASCE, consists of members from world famous universities and engineering consulting companies, such as Arizona State University, University of Kansas, University of Texas at San Antonio, The Collin Group, Ltd and Hayward Baker. ECIDI, as the project undertaker, as well as over 40 leaders and experts from universities and companies, such as Taizhou Circular Economy Cluster Area Management Commission, Zhejiang University, Hohai University, Wuhan University, Zhejiang University of Technology, Taizhou University, Jiangsu Xintai Geotechnical Co., Ltd. and Hangzhou Shenyuan Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. attended the investigation.

The soft soil foundation of the cluster area in Taizhou Bay is very representative in China. It features thick mucky formation, high water content and poor physico-mechanical property, and is difficult to be treated. ECIDI took lead in testing the soft soil foundation treatment technologies of air-boosted vacuum preloading and electro-osmotic drainage during implementing the Lot I of FY2018 Municipal Road Infrastructure Project of Eastern New District of Taizhou City and the Soft Foundation Treatment Project (Lot II) of the block to the south of Changpu River in the east of Juyang Avenue, Eastern New District of Taizhou City boldly, and achieved good results. In particular, the air-boosted vacuum preloading technology has substantial advantages such as low comprehensive unit price, easy construction and obvious treatment effects compared with the traditional vacuum preloading technology. ECIDI has accumulated rich soft foundation treatment experience and represented the most advanced technology in the domestic coastal soft soil foundation treatment field.

This investigation and exchange is the first large-scale international exchange activity since establishment of the international cooperation base for disaster prevention and reduction of coastal soft soil engineering by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. In the activity, participants mainly discussed the soft foundation treatment technologies adopted in the municipal and first-level land development of cluster areas, such as traditional vacuum preloading, air-boosted vacuum preloading and electro-osmotic drainage, facilitating the innovation and international exchange of soft soil foundation treatment technologies represented by the coastal areas of Taizhou City, having positive effects on the development and impacts of ECIDI’s soft soil foundation treatment technologies and also encouraging the confidence and determination of ECIDI’s field technicians to insist on the principle of “Developing and Making ECIDI Stronger by Science and Technology” in the project.
