Recently, the reconstruction and equipment supply project of Nigeria KAINJI Hydropower Station conducted by Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited was selected as the “Zhejiang-Africa Economic & Trade Cooperation Top 10 Projects”. As an emerging market involved in import and export business, Africa is also a significant region for enterprises from Zhejiang to “go out” and carry out capacity cooperation. The cooperation between Zhejiang and Africa is highly valued by Zhejiang Provincial Committee of CPC and Zhejiang Provincial Government, and the governors pointed out that Zhejiang-Africa Cooperation shall take the lead in China-Africa Cooperation and always walk in the forefront with responsibility. Key projects were highlighted in the Zhejiang-Africa Economic & Trade Cooperation Symposium.
Built in the years between 1963 and 1969, KAINJI Hydropower Station was the largest hydropower station in Nigeria, with the total installed capacity of 760 MW. Though 8 generators were equipped in the powerhouse, only 3 are operative at relatively low load with frequent malfunctioning and low generation rate. In order to recover the capability of power generation, the station Owner, Power Holding Company of Nigeria, applied loads from the World Bank for repairing the partial generators and was permitted to make public bidding.
In 2011, Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited undertook the reconstruction project for KAINJI Hydropower Station after winning the bid. The scope of work mainly includes design, equipment supply and installation of a variety of facilities such as 1G5 generator (120 MW axial flow), 1G6 generator (120 MW axial flow) and 1G12 generator (100 MW axial flow) and other public utilities. In 2016, the reconstruction of the three generators was completed and grid power was generated successfully, and until then the whole project came to an end perfectly by obtaining the OAC certificate.
After the reconstruction of KAINJI Power Station, all three generators regained the rated output and the performance of each element increased remarkably, which provided reliable guarantee to the power generation capacity in the station; In the meanwhile, the professional trainings that we offered to the technical personnel during the construction process greatly improved the status of station operation and maintenance.
As the society was in shortage of electric power, KAINJI Power Station greatly strengthened the capability of providing electricity after it was put into operation, which has brought improved wellbeing for local residents. Upon the completion, the station, supported by bilateral governments and people, provides new technologies and specific solutions to such similar projects for their development and implementation, passes on the practical experience for the life extension of the hydropower station, and also serves as reference for the promotion of other stations. Meanwhile, this project plays an active role in driving the exportation of electromechanical equipment from China and also in applying Chinese technical standard in other countries.
